This report will allow us to advise on feeding amounts for healthy weight management and checking daily levels of protein, sugar and starch levels.

This Nutritional analysis gives information on the nutritional value of your haylage. Particularly relevant is information on sugar (ESC and WSC separately) and starch levels for laminitic horses.

The report is carried out by an international laboratory using high tech near-infrared technology to identify a full range of data – Dry Matter, Digestible Energy, Crude Protein, Acid Detergent Fibre, Neutral Detergent Fibre, Water Soluble Carbohydrates, ESC (Simple Sugars), Starch, and Non-Fibre Carbohydrates.

This information is vitally important when feeding laminitic horses. An ESC sugar and starch content of over 10% has been found to be unsuitable for laminitic horses and keeping starch and sugar content to under 10% can make a dramatic difference to these horses.  This report will tell you whether your forage suitable for a laminitic horse.

This Nutritional analysis gives information on the nutritional value of your haylage. Particularly relevant is information on sugar (ESC and WSC separately) and starch levels for laminitic horses.

The analysis also measures protein levels and digestible energy levels for horses so that performance horses, good-doers or horses which are hard to keep weight on can be fed accurate amounts of forage for reducing or maintaining weight. Please note that this is purely a report of the nutritional levels in your forage showing percentage and gram amounts in your sample.

A nutritional report will allow Forageplus to decide whether your horse needs additional protein and hard feed or whether just supplementing with minerals will be sufficient to cover all your horse’s nutritional needs.

Nutritional Analysis (NIR) PLUS Nitrate Test (Wet Chemistry)

Forageplus hay or haylage nutritional plus nitrates analysis for horses gives nutrient levels in forage for feeding to horses. This procedure utilises traditional, wet chemistry, analytical methods to determine nitrate levels in the forage.

Nitrates (NO3) – can become a problem for horses when forage contains high amounts. Stress from drought, fertilisation and manure application practices where the balance of nitrogen to other minerals like sulphur in the soil is not taken into account, are factors that can lead to high nitrate levels.

In addition to there being little research in general on nitrate toxicity in horses, even less is known about the effect of ingesting chronic “less than toxic” levels of nitrate over a period of time. Nitrate competes with the uptake of iodide and can affect thyroid function.

North Carolina State University has adopted the same guidelines suggested as safe limits for cattle for equines. They report “Excessive intake of nitrates decreases the blood’s oxygen-carrying ability, which causes anxiety, increased respiration rate, and breathing difficulty. Severe cases result in loss of coordination, muscle twitching, and death”.

Where you see excessive protein in your haylage sample it is wise to check nitrate levels.  In general grass hay and haylage in the UK should not be in excess of 12% protein.  Even at 12% protein, some hays and haylages will have nitrate levels that are high.

The maximum acceptable Nitrate level in forage for adult horses is 0.5%. Higher levels may be “diluted” with very low nitrate haylage to bring the Nitrate level for total forage-fed below 0.5%. Haylage for breeding mares and growing horses should not exceed 0.20% Nitrate.

Wet Chemistry Nutritional Analysis

This procedure utilises traditional, wet chemistry, analytical methods to determine nutrient levels in forage for feeding to horses. It includes levels of protein, fibre, carbohydrates, moisture, dry matter, digestible energy, crude protein, estimated lysine, acid detergent fibre, neutral detergent fibre, Ethanol Soluble Carbohydrates (ESC), Water Soluble Carbohydrates (WSC), starch and non-fibre carbohydrates (NFC).

Knowing the percent level of ESC and starch in haylage has been shown to be extremely important when feeding forage to horses prone to laminitis.  A combined level under 10% means that it will likely be suitable for a laminitic.  Commonly reported total levels of sugar available in other nutritional tests are not sufficient to determine whether forage is suitable for laminitic equines.
