This balancer is a powder, which is very low in sugar and starch, contains no fillers and only the highest purity minerals and vitamins. The Forageplus Performance Winter Equine Balancer makes the ideal accompaniment to straight feeds used in horse feed such as beet pulp, oats, alfalfa, copra and wheat bran although compound mixes can also be used.

Forageplus Performance Balancer has been formulated using data obtained from scientific analysis of our many samples of forage and contains only the commonly deficient minerals, vitamins and amino acids found to be needed to help balance the diet of a performance horse. All the ingredients are designed to aid optimum health and performance. This Winter version contains 3000iu of vitamin E per 170-gram amount.

This horse feed balancer will support muscle strength and development, enhance stamina and athleticism and give your horse the extra nutrients needed to maintain a high level of performance in all activities.

The minerals used are of high quality to ensure against contamination with heavy metals and enable good absorption rates.  We also recommend the addition of linseed with this balancer to provide adequate amounts of omega 3.  Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid that is in short supply in winter forage, feeding 42 grams of micronised linseed per 220 kg of body weight will provide optimum amounts.

Forageplus Performance Winter Equine Balancer facilitates good stamina and supports healthy muscle, healthy skin – especially where horses are rubbing manes and tails, reduces coat bleaching, helps maintain excellent hoof quality. Provides a blend of forage-focussed minerals and vitamins to maintain high performance health.

Forageplus Performance Winter Equine Balancer matches nutrients to the forage consumed by a horse. Supplying correct levels of nutrients, as matched to ratios determined by the National Research Council, is an important consideration for horses in moderate to very hard work so that there is support and maintenance of:

  • healthy, structurally sound and robust hooves with a strong laminae connection
  • heathy frogs
  • healthy skin
  • vibrant, shiny coat colour
  • robust tendons, ligaments and joints
  • a strong immune system
  • healthy muscles
  • healthy nerves
  • healthy lungs and breathing
  • a well functioning metabolic system
  • good fertility and bone
  • a healthy digestive system
  • strong liver function
  • healthy joints
  • good growth in young horses

Horses that are subjected to high levels of stress through frequent competition and or travelling may also benefit from Egusin SLH and Egusin 250  for maintenance of strong, gut health.  To help support the maintenance of muscles and a healthy immune system we recommend APF Pro.

Horses in heavy work may also benefit from higher levels of vitamin E which we sell as a separate for additional supplementation.  Please contact us if you need advice on amounts to feed.

What should I feed with this balancer?

We recommend the feeding of straight feeds like beet pulp, oats, alfalfa and copra with our balancers, however compound feeds can also be used. The important thing to remember is that our minerals provide the nutrients needed to fuel the chemical reactions taking place in the body.

Having the correct ratio of minerals available, matched to forage, in a nutritionally focussed supplement works much, much better than a broad spectrum approach which is the one used in all bagged feeds.

Feed our minerals to provide optimum nutrient levels then provide your energy requirements from a range of straight feeds. If you need advice then contact us as we are experts in this field due to drag hunting our horses through winter and competing in endurance through summer.

Read this article to find out more about optimum feed for performance horses

What about electrolytes?

Our balancer supplies 15 grams of salt per 170 gram dose, this is above the normal amount needed to match what is commonly deficient in most forages. However if your horse sweats heavily for more than 1 hour we would advise the addition of another 20 grams of salt in the horses feed after exercise and drinking. If your horses is sweating more than this then contact us for advice.

How does Forageplus formulate their horse feed balancers?

We have a very different approach to the levels of nutrients which starts with the grass, hay or haylage horses eat. Find out more about how we use statistical analysis of hundreds of scientific reports of forage to formulate the levels in our horse feed balancers here.

I have been feeding the Winter Performance Balancer for a few weeks now and it has really improved my horses energy levels and strength and stamina for competition.

I only started using this February 2021 and I wish I had started it in November 2020 because it made such a difference in a matter of week. My mare drops weight over winter and this balancer seemed to be the only one that can make it stick so she was event season ready, my only complaint it that I didn’t start it sooner – silly me!

This product although quite pricey, is worth spending on. I have a highland pony who developed a compromised white line with both back feet affected. We have been bare foot since November last year. We have a very wet and peaty croft for the horses with rough grazing. I have been feeding the winter balancer for the last 8 weeks as well as learning all about hoof health. Who knew the hoof can be so affected by such a range of things like ground and combination wormers! Since using this supplement the white line integrity has massively improved and he is much more forward going on a range of surfaces. I would absolutely recommend this product for anyone with hoof problems and if your horse is barefoot.

My horse has been on this just over 3 months now. His feet are about half way grown out after removing his shoes. He has been in full work the whole time including competitions, hacking on the roads and working in the school. He has not needed boots at all. His feet look great, he has a nice shiny coat and plenty of energy for his work. But the best thing is that after 4 years of trying every Pre/Probiotic on the market to help with his loose droppings, he now does ‘normal’ droppings. No more ‘cowpats’ and dirty tail to wash every other day!

Yesterday while riding on a dull day i noticed how lustrous and shiny my horse’s dark brown coat was. A few years ago at this time of year he had orange highlights in his mane and tail and his body was faded and dull looking. I feed Forageplus Winter Performance balancer because my horse works pretty hard all year round and he looks and performs fantastically. I knew he looked better but sometimes it just makes you stop and stare. the only difference is the balanced minerals so thanks Forageplus.
