The profile of UK forage does not usually indicate the need for additional supplementation of calcium for adult horses.

Lactating horses, pregnant horses, young horses and horses in moderate to heavy work will all need higher levels.

1 x 5ml scoop = approx. 6 grams of Calcium Carbonate (2.8g of elemental calcium).

If unsure of what rate to feed, please feel free to contact us for feed rate advice.

What is Calcium for Horses?

Calcium is a structural mineral that is primarily found in your horse’s bones and teeth. It is essential for proper muscle function, nerve signalling, and other critical body functions. In addition to supporting skeletal health, calcium helps regulate blood pressure, plays a role in insulin release, and is involved in muscle contraction.

Many horses can get adequate calcium from their forage (grass, hay, and haylage), but some may require additional supplementation depending on factors like activity level, age, and dietary intake.

How Much Calcium Should I Feed My Horse?

Horses have varying calcium requirements depending on factors such as age, work level, and overall diet:

  • Adult horses at maintenance: Require around 20 grams of calcium per day.
  • Growing, pregnant, or lactating horses need much higher calcium levels, often not covered by their forage.
  • Horses in moderate to heavy work may also need additional calcium supplementation.

Forageplus Calcium Carbonate is ideal for boosting calcium levels, especially for horses that require higher calcium intake than what is naturally available in their diet.

Feeds high in naturally occurring calcium such as alfalfa and beet pulp can often be used to supplement higher levels of calcium in addition to calcium carbonate

  • 40% elemental calcium: Provides a highly effective source of calcium.
  • Supports muscle & nerve function: Calcium is key to healthy muscle contractions and nerve transmission.

Feeding Guidelines:

Supplementation needs depend on your horse’s current diet and mineral levels:

  • Lactating, pregnant, young horses and those in moderate to heavy work will need more calcium.
  • For a 500kg horse, feed 1 x 5ml scoop per day (approx. 6g of Calcium Carbonate, providing 2.8g of elemental calcium), unless a forage analysis suggests otherwise.

If you’re unsure about your horse’s calcium needs, feel free to contact us for expert advice.

Forageplus does not advise the feeding of separate minerals unless levels have been checked by carrying out a forage analysis. The ratio of calcium and the ratio of minerals are important and feeding one mineral without supplementing correct levels of another can be detrimental to horse health. If you are uncertain of mineral levels then feeding either a Forageplus Equine Balancer or carrying out analysis of forage is wise.

Find out how the ratios of minerals fed can support healthy growth and the maintenance of bones by visiting the Forageplus Talk site here.
