A known DE (calorie) level means that Forageplus can advise those who need to carefully manage good doer horses who are prone to weight gain on how much to feed to maintain a healthy weight.

Equally, we can advise those with poor doers, elderly horses or those in moderate to heavy work what concentrates and what level of concentrates will be needed to match to this hay for optimum weight management and performance energy.

Balancing Suggestions

Feed Suggestions

This hay is suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis and needs no soaking. For a 500 kg horse in maintenance/light work fed 10.2 kg of this meadow hay, feed:

40 grams of Forageplus Hoof & Skin Winter/Summer Balancer carried in any fast soak fibre provider or small feed of your choice.

We suggest 200 grams of unmolassed beet pulp (dry weight).

Include 100 grams of Micronised Linseed each day for omega 3 supplementation, if on less than 6 hours of good spring or summer grazing and include the following separate minerals for best balance:

– 1 x 15 ml scoop of Magnesium Oxide
– 1 x 2.5 ml scoop of Bioplex Manganese
– 1 x 5 ml scoop of Seaweed (iodine)
– 1 x 10 ml scoop of Lysine
– 1 x 5 ml scoop of Vitamin E (not needed if the horse is on more than 6 hours of good spring or summer grazing.

10 grams of the table, rock or sea salt in addition to the Forageplus horse feed balancer.

Protein is a little low so feeding an additional 50 – 100 grams of Topline Plus per day is wise to boost essential amino acid levels.

After 1 hour of sweating, to cover electrolyte losses, add an additional 35 grams of salt in a small feed after work.

This hay has literally been a life saver for my laminitic Fjord. Following her first attack of laminitis, feeding soaked hay, our vet decided the mare’s condition was not improving, the pain was uncontrollable and we should call it a day. I switched to feeding this low ESC hay in a trickle net and pony has made amazing recovery! Her feet are growing much better hoof, she is losing weight, her crest has gone and fat distribution his now normal. Total peace of mind in a bag. Thank you!

Worth every penny! My horse has gut issues and laminitis! Using this hay means I can control her sugar and starch intake! She is doing so well, the best I have ever seen her in 10 years!
No more need to muzzle her in the paddock! Definitely recommend!
