What is Chondroitin Sulphate for Horses?

Chondroitin for horses, also known as chondroitin sulphate, is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), a type of compound that binds to collagen and elastin in the formation of cartilage.

Chondroitin sulphate plays a crucial role in supporting cartilage production and promoting healthy joints, especially in older horses needing nutritional support for cartilage health. It is a naturally occurring biological polymer derived from connective tissue and supports the overall health of cartilage, joints, and vertebrae.

Chondroitin is found in the lining of the digestive tract, blood vessels, mucous membranes, and arteries, contributing to normal blood flow throughout the horse’s body.

This powerful compound supports joint health while also benefiting skin health, especially where rubbing of manes and tails is common.

Why Should I Feed My Horse Chondroitin Sulphate?

Chondroitin for horses offers many benefits, not only for joint health but also for skin health and immune system support. Key benefits include:

  • Supports Cartilage Production: Helps maintain healthy cartilage and promotes normal joint function.
  • Maintains Joint & Vertebrae Health: Essential for older horses, keeping joints mobile and comfortable.
  • Promotes Normal Blood Flow: Supports proper circulation throughout the body, including key areas like the joints.
  • Healthy Skin Support: Complements skin health, particularly when used in conjunction with spirulina to help maintain a healthy immune response to insect bites and allergies.
  • Helps Maintain Hoof & Coat Health: Supports overall body condition, contributing to healthier skin and fur.

The Benefits of Chondroitin Sulphate for Horses

Chondroitin sulphate is well-regarded for its positive impact on joint health. It was the first joint nutraceutical used in horses and is known for its ability to support joint mobility and reduce joint pain:

  • Joint Soreness Relief: It helps “thaw out” joint stiffness, improving the fluidity of movement.
  • Targets Inflammation: Targets problematic joints, providing relief from discomfort and aiding recovery.
  • Skin Health: Works alongside spirulina to support healthy skin, especially for horses prone to skin irritations or allergies.
  • Recommended for Laminitis or Insulin Resistance: For horses with insulin resistance or laminitis, chondroitin sulphate may be a preferred option over glucosamine.

I put off ordering for a while, as it seemed a gamble compared to the cost. Eventually I decided to try it & wanted to buy from Forageplus to be sure of a quality product worth the outlay. My cob has now been on it for sweet itch plus Spirulina. I’ve been using the Spirulina for longer than the Chondroitin ( having chosen the cheaper supplement first). I have to report I am really pleased with the outcome so far, over a month of using it. There seems to be a positive change with his skin resilience, definitely far less itching, less skin issues & less broken fences than last year due to less itching. The flies seem worse this year so far, so feel I made the right decision buying & using both the Chondroitin & Spirulina in the end.

This is an amazing all in one product to help one of my older horses maintain healthy joints and it stops her from suffering from severe sweet itch.
