What is GUT-Plus for horses?

Digestive health is crucial for the happiness and performance of your horse. GUT Plus is an effective equine feed and probiotic gut balancer for horses, supporting nutrient digestibility, the health of the stomach lining and normal acid levels in all horses.

When can a gut balancer for horses be used?

A gut balancer can be used for immediate digestive support for horses. It can be used continuously or simply in times of high stress, irritation or digestive upset to restore natural gut balance. Irritable horses will often benefit from a gut supplement being added to the daily feed.

Suitable for all horses and ponies, on high cereal or forage diets for ongoing digestive tract maintenance and general wellness of the equine digestive tract.

A gut supplement is ideal for older horses, poor doers and horses and ponies that lose condition at any time of year. It may also be fed to horses or ponies at times of stressful situations such as travelling, competing, lack of appetite, loose droppings, changing yard, changing feed or needing greater natural immunity.

GUT-Plus is low in sugar and starch so can be safely fed to support hindgut microflora and gastrointestinal health of horses and ponies prone to laminitis. The large intestine and caecum are often referred to as the hindgut.

Nutritional Information

Analytical Constituents

Crude Protein 12.00%, Crude Fat 16.75%, Crude Ash 16.50%, Crude Fibres 1.0%, Calcium (Ca) 6.0%, Magnesium (Mg) 1.10%.

This product has a combined ESC and starch that is under 10%.

Why should you maintain healthy digestive systems in horses?

A horse’s digestive system is unique and has evolved for many years to digest a constant supply of low-starch, fibrous feed. But domestication and modern horse management mean that horses are sometimes fed diets that the digestive system isn’t adapted to resulting in poor digestive health, excess acid and tummy trouble.

Optimum support for the digestive lining can be achieved by feeding digestive supplements with an effective prebiotic, a balanced combination of plant extracts and raw ingredients to act as digestive soothers, tackle excess stomach acid and support correct intestinal flora.

Supporting beneficial bacteria and addressing the effects of mycotoxins are also important to avoid poor condition, health and performance.

Why should you feed our gut balancer?

  • Supports recovery of a vulnerable digestive fore and hindgut prone to digestive upset
  • Re-establishes and maintains healthy mucosa for optimum digestive function with each application
  • Contains nutritional soluble fibres to support dietary fibre and healthy intestinal function and normal acid levels
  • Contains whole oatmeal – to re-establish and maintain a healthy stomach and gut mucosa
  • Includes aloe vera gel extract – soothes vulnerable and delicate gastric epithelial cell lining for optimum digestion
  • Contains prebiotics fructo-oligosaccharide and probiotics yea sacc and biomoss – supplying probiotic supplementation for total gastric health and the maintenance of the supportive population of bacteria
  • Pectin and Lecithin – form a physical barrier between the gastric juices and the sensitive non-glandular region of the stomach to combat irritation
  • Zeolite – can absorb undesirable substances and reduce the damaging effects of mycotoxins which may be present in feed such as haylage
  • Acid Buff – provides a slow-release form of one of the key nutrients, calcium carbonate which has an acid buffering action superior to normal calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate
  • Pea Protein – raises levels of essential amino acids which has a range of benefits. High levels of essential amino acids support the formation of a strong epithelial intestinal lining free from weakness.
  • Contains no alfalfa meal to irritate or excite horses
  • Under 10% ESC sugar and starch for sensitive good doers and laminitic horses

Additonal Information

Forageplus has found that the protocol for feeding this product is best as feeding for a two-week period and re-assessing and either reducing the feed rate to 50% if all behaviours have gone or kept at the full rate of 40 grams per 100 kg of body weight for another 2 weeks.  Do this one more time if only partial or no progress is made.

GUT Plus can be top-dressed mixed into the bucket feed or mixed into lukewarm water. Add 100 grams of GUT Plus to 500 ml of water and mix it into soaked feed (beet pellets/high fibre feed).

GUT Plus can be supplemented in periods when horses are participating in competitions, as the product does not contain any substances prohibited by the FEI or Jockey Club, and there are no undesirable secondary effects.

Storage: Please store in a cool and dry place.

Free from any prohibited substances as defined under Jockey Club and FEI rules.

If you have seen no success after 6 weeks then look at muscular/facial issues.

I have an 8 year old rescue who had suffered a lot of trauma in the past, was finding it hard to settle and trust and was very reactive.
Since giving her this balance for those reasons and to support her gut as she suffered badly last year with sweet itch and allergies, I’ve seen a marked change in her being, she’s so much more calm and open and I’m looking forward to seeing how this will also help in the summer with allergies.
I can’t fault the quality of Forage Plus for this product and the winter hoof and skin balancer that I give to the whole herd. Thank you so much 🙏

My elderly mare who has lost 5 of her teeth was suffering from watery poo, you could see longish strands of hay in the poo and she was constantly windy and uncomfortable with it. I have tried many digestive foods and supplements to increase fibre intake and improve her digestion but there was no real improvement, since using gut plus her poo is much more normal in consistency but the biggest improvement is not showing the discomfort she had before. ( her tail would clamp and swish sharply as though experiencing internal pain), would highly recommend.

  3. KarenB (verified owner)

I started using this product as my horse has a history of ulcers and had been showing signs of reoccurrence. The difference and improvement was very noticeable when I started her on it. She is more relaxed and so far no repeat occurrence of the mild colic.

  4. Tracey Cole (verified owner)

After trying several other gut supplements and combinations of feeds and individual products to enhance gut function, I’ve found Gut Plus to be the only one to work. I mix in a little fenugreek for my fussy eater, but my other mare eats her feed without.

  5. victoria ashby (verified owner)

Sadly my pony has had a complete lifestyle change. This has without unsettled him and instead of putting him through the stress of no forage, a trip to the vets to test for ulcers, whilst no visible signs to speak of after speaking to forage plus I decided to give this a try, He absolutely loves it, seems to be a lot happier and content living on his grass free track. Very much looks forward to mealtimes. The latest results have shown levels are back to normal, along with soaked hay and a forage plus based diet we have achieved quite a turn around in 8 weeks. I Will keep him on this a little longer

  6. Catherine Hardy (verified owner)

I have been using this product for my 2 mini ponies who suffer from gut issues and have been pleased that even the fussy eater has found it to be palatable and eats her meals enthusiastically. Both ponies currently look well and happy. The fussy pony is particularly cheerful at the moment which is great to see and the right management, including diet, is key for both these little ponies.

I use this to compliment the performance balancer and feed Gut Plus when Eventing at big venues, Chatsworth, Rockingham etc. And when travelling much further afield 2hrs+. I’ve never had any digestive problems and I would attribute that to feeding Gut Plus during times of high pressure and stress. If you have a horse with historical digestive problems I can see (when used continuously) Gut Plus being hugely effective at preventing further problems.

I wormed my 11hh 22yr old Cushings and metabolic pony and she had a laminitis attack a few days later. I had never heard of this before, but it seemed to be too much of a coincidence to not be connected. Apparently death of worms, or even the wormer itself, can upset gut flora and trigger an attack. Sarah recommended I try Forage plus Gut plus (as well as the usual laminitis protocol of course). Wow, I was not expecting such rapid results, but 5 days after starting the Gut plus the little pony was completely sound and back out on the track with her friend. I will definitely keep a bag in store to help prevent future problems. Thank you so much Forage Plus.

Only 5 years old and not in a lot of work, my trimmer noticed he did not like to stand still for any length of time whilst being tied up to have his feet trimmed, that he stood there chewing the wooden rail, he was fidgety and constantly needing occupying. He was on a high fibre, very low sugar/starch diet but was difficult to manage. However, I tried him on this product. I noticed a slight change within a few days but the noticeable change came after 4 weeks. By the 5th week, he stood quietly, did not chew the wood and was generally much easier to handle and to be around. I thought he would be fine after being on it for 5 weeks so discontinued feeding but at the same time he went on 2 months box rest which in hindsight was very naive of me. I have now ordered more to help him get through this as the stress of being on box rest will mean he needs support to maintain a healthy digestive system. Having seen such a difference in his behaviour, I will be keeping him on this as maintenance for many months to come! I totally recommend this product and would strongly recommend a 4/5 week period minimum to see the best results. Good luck!
