Our Hebridean organic seaweed (ascophyllum nodosum) is a type of seaweed, harvested in the cold clear waters of the outer hebrides and is one of the best sources of iodine for your horse. Only living weed is harvested and it is carefully processed so that nothing of an artificial nature is added. It is 100% natural, plant derived and is organically certified.
Some horse grass, hay or haylage will be short of iodine so we will sometimes advise supplementation of small levels of seaweed for horses to boost iodine levels in the equine diet.
We do not advise the feeding of seaweed for horses as a general broad spectrum supplement for the reasons outlined in this article.
Please note that all our equine balancers including our performance range now contain iodine in the form of potassium iodide for optimum health. The levels are based on statistical analysis of data gained from our analysis of forage and reference to NRC guidelines.
Seaweed is natural product which will have levels of iodine which vary from batch to batch however a guide is to assume 0.08% iodine in our seaweed.
It may be that some seaweed batches are higher than this but as long as you stick to the rule of not feeding more than 1 x 5 ml scoop you will not feed too much iodine.
This article will also help you understand that iodine can be at varying levels in seaweed because it is a natural product.
It is wise to analyse forage to determine amounts of iodine needing to be supplemented. However, where this is not possible a guide is to feed 400 – 600 kg horse 1 x 2.5 ml scoop per day.
Forageplus does not advise feeding more that 1 x 5 ml scoop where levels in forage are unknown.
1 x 2.5ml scoop = approx 2 grams
1 x 5ml scoop = approx 5 grams.
If feeding a 5ml scoop for an average 500kg horse this product should last you 222 days.
