Jo is extremely knowledgeable about horse bio-mechanics and whole horse health. She has spent many years, with Sarah, dabbling in both natural horsemanship techniques and classical methods of training.

You will see her at every event Forageplus organises as she is both passionate and obsessed with doing the best for her horses. She is also quite a mine of information about whether you should ride your horse barefoot or perhaps shoe it for certain events or reasons as she both shoes and rides her horses barefoot.

She says:

Where to start… Well I’ve been involved with or owned horses for at least a hundred years(!) starting with a passion for ponies at age 7. My sister had a pony which used to buck/jump me off regularly so I took to riding at the local riding school which was marginally safer. It was in the days when you could help out all day and learn to manage recalcitrant ponies, muck out, groom, tack up and teach as well as learn to ride. A great grounding.

As a teenager I spent 3 years in Hong Kong seeing a very different side of horse ownership, learning from army instructors on ex racehorses and tiny Borneo polo stallions. I rode dressage, jumping and more and had a ball including competing for Hong Kong Pony Club in Thailand on borrowed horses way up in the country in the north.

A hiatus occurred while I got A levels, a degree in Zoology (during this time I rode in the university riding club and competed in Italy) a BHSAI and finally a job and earned enough money to at last buy my own horse.

Since then I have owned a variety of horses kept both at many livery yards and also now at home and competed in pretty much all equestrian sport. I have learned much, mostly by trial and error and my deep interest in physiology, nutrition and biomechanics have led me down diverse paths to train with many top clinicians in a variety of skills.

I am proud to have learned from Kerry Ridgway, Georges Dewez, Klaus Shoeneich, Ken Faulkner, Dr Eleanor Kellon and many other skilled riders, trainers and horse educators. I believe strongly that one should never stop learning and always have an open mind. I study all aspects of care and training and have used my knowledge of nutrition to good effect for myself and my horses.

I currently own two horses, a British warmblood who took me to 7th at Badminton Grassroots in 2013 and an American Curly horse whose mission seems to be to expand my knowledge even further. I love them both. Apart from them I have a Schnoodle and a husband, in that order!
