A powdered form of vitamin E for horses containing 50% synthetic vitamin E acetate adsorbate oil on silica that provides 500 IU per gram and is a very convenient way to feed this vitamin to your horse.

Our synthetic vitamin E has half the bio-availability of the natural form. For more information on the forms of vitamin E please find an article here.

Vitamin E functions in at least two metabolic roles: as a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant that supports the immune system helping to neutralise free radicals and in a more specific role interrelated with the metabolism of selenium.

The increasing use of fats or the utilization of feeds with unsaturated fatty acids, which are susceptible to rancidity, warrants the use of higher levels of Vitamin E, since rancidity destroys vitamin E. Vitamin E also helps to maintain red blood cell levels and to act with selenium in supporting well functioning muscles.  It also plays an important role in nerve and muscle function and reproduction.

Vitamin E for horses is found in abundant amounts in green and growing pasture however between 30 – 80% of vitamin E is lost between cutting and baling of forage and this loss is continued while the forage is in storage due to the fragile nature of vitamin E. Winter pasture  contains little to none of this vitamin so supplementation to equines is essential.

Research has shown that horses on restricted grazing or without access to pasture and those in heavy work, under stress or sick should receive  supplemental vitamin E.

Observations of race horses fed with levels of 2000 IU of Vitamin E 5 months before, and continued throughout the racing season, showed increased stamina in supplemented horses. These horses also showed a decreased recovery time between races with healthy muscles. Vitamin E supplementation improves the breeding performance in both mares and stallions and has been reported to support healthy sweat response in horses.

Researchers are continuing to examine the role of vitamin E in horse health, in agriculture it has long been known that increased supplementation of vitamin E supports immune function in cattle.  Researchers now suggest much higher levels of vitamin E supplementation than is commonly contained in many horse feed stuffs.

I purchased the Vitamin E Oil to supplement the Forageplus Summer Balancer as my 27 year old Icelandic gelding is on restricted grazing due to needing a carefully controlled diet suitable for a laminitis prone horse. This product has helped to support his skin health and he can now be turned out 24/7 without a protective rug – he has had a rug on for the last 10+ years! Not sure whether this should have gone under the Vit E Oil or Summer Balancer review!

We have been on a bespoke mineral mix including Vitamin E for a couple of years. This summer I decided to leave out the Vitamin E to save a little bit of money. However, my young horse isn’t allowed much grass. When eventing he seemed slow and easily puffed. I added the Vitamin E back into the mix and despite reduced work due to other issues, on his subsequent outings, he got fewer time faults XC and finished full of running. I won’t be skipping on the Vitamin E oil next summer!!

Since being supplemented with this product in with her balanced minerals, my mare has kept condition throughout the winter and her energy has improved considerably compared to previous winters without this product in her daily diet.

Since being prescribed the bespoke feeding mix by Forageplus, the Vitamin E Oil has been introduced.

His coat and skin have improved no end.

No more skin sores, which we have had for the last 6 years!!!!
